Bookham & District TN

Our group was started, around 1990, and is mainly financed, by Bookham & Horsley Rotary Club. As well as those two villages we have expanded to serve Leatherhead and the Mole Valley villages: Ashtead, Fetcham, Great and Little Bookham, and Effingham. Many of our Listeners came from the Royal School for the Blind in Leatherhead, now SeeAbility. We record, on Thursday evenings, in the Conference Room of the Grange Centre for people with disabilities, who also kindly provide space, for the rest of the week, for our cupboard containing our kit.

We 'went digital' in 2010 and the changeover went amazingly smoothly. A member of a team, mainly from our Readers and Editors, visited each Listener to deliver a Boom Box and teach the recipient to use it. We have not needed to change the system except that we now supply Sovereign players to new members (and to replace any damaged Boom Boxes).

Our source of information for the readings is the local paper, the Leatherhead (and Dorking) Advertiser.

It seems that other centres have the same main problem as we do - the difficulty of contacting people who might wish to join our group, due to the Data Information Act. Our clientele is falling slowly.
